Summer Sippers: Five Healthy Alternatives to Sugary Drinks

It's hot out and that icy soft drink looks refreshing, no? We all want to stay hydrated in the summer heat, but don't make the mistake of reaching for a sugary soda or sports drink. Even many fruit juices are high in sugar. A Harvard Study found that 12 ounces of a leading brand of cola and a leading brand of energy drink each contained 42 grams of sugar, while a well-known sport drink contained 21 grams of sugar. Sugary, acidic drinks are particularly damaging when they are sipped frequently throughout the day because they spend a prolonged amount of time washed over the teeth.

Wildwood Family Dental wants you to be healthy this summer and that includes your smile. We have put together a list of alternative beverages to keep you cool and smiling!

  • Iced Tea on a summer afternoon is refreshing. Try adding a natural sweetener like honey (not too much) or stevia, a natural herb with a sweet taste, without the carbs or calories.

  • Green Tea is a tasty and healthy alternative also. A study published in the Journal of Periodontology showed that routine intake of green tea may actually help healthy teeth and gums. And did you know hot drinks on a hot day can actually cool you down? Drinking a hot beverage makes you sweat more, which can cool you off.

  • Vegetable Juice contains much less natural sugar than fruit juice. If you have a juicer, try making your own.

  • Smoothies are a cold treat and healthy for your whole body including teeth! Throw your favorite fresh or frozen fruit in the blender with some yogurt, soy or almond milk and a few ice cubes. Blend on high and enjoy!

  • Water doesn’t have to be boring or tasteless. Just add some frozen berries, cucumber slices, or a few mint leaves to liven up flavor! Lemon slices are also a popular addition, but use sparingly as the acid can cause enamel erosion to teeth. You can also try adding just a splash of 100% fruit juice to sparkling water for a refreshing treat.

So this summer, visit a local market. And please let us know about your favorite in the comments and share your top tooth-friendly treats! Remember healthy eating equals a healthy smile!

We hope you will try some of these invigorating alternatives and keep teeth healthy this summer and all year long! For more information or to make an appointment, call us at 425.481.1889. You can also find us on Facebook and Twitter.
