The season of holiday travel shouldn’t mean a vacation from your dental health. In fact, the change in your routine and diet means it is even more essential to be proactive in maintaining a beautiful and healthy smile.
To gear up for the magical (and treat-filled) season ahead, our experts here at Wildwood Dental are sharing five tips for a healthy holiday smile:
Travel with a dental kit
Lucky for us, nearly everything comes in a travel size, so putting together a mini dental travel kit is an easy way to encourage healthy habits while on the road. Pack a travel-sized mouthwash, floss and a toothbrush for everyone in the family, and let the kids pick out a special brush for their time away. Allowing them to choose will help entice them to put it to use.
Protect your toothbrush
If you’re traveling during the holidays, make sure to keep your toothbrush safe inside an antibacterial cover. Being tucked inside luggage and in hotel bathrooms can mean the opportunity for bacteria to find its way onto your brush and into your mouth. If you have a completely closed cover, make sure to let your toothbrush dry before covering it to avoid creating a bacteria breeding ground.
Keep an eye on the foods you consume
It’s inevitable — we all consume more sugary beverages and desserts during the holidays. Instead of hitting up the cookie table for seconds, visit the veggie tray instead and be sure to wash away any extra food particles with water to avoid a cavity-filled start to 2015.
Maintain a routine
Don’t dismiss your regular dental habits. It can be tempting to fall asleep on the couch after a long day filled with family, but forgetting your oral health routine could mean dental problems later on. Make brushing and flossing a priority for all members of your family.
Visit us before year-end
Don’t put off much-needed visits until after the holidays. Staying consistent with cleanings will prevent dental issues from ruining your time away. Additionally, don’t forget about those flex benefits! Many flex plans require you to spend any accumulated funds before year-end, so get those appointments in if possible.
We wish you all a wonderful holiday season full of love joy, and of course — beautiful SMILES, Seattle! Cheers to a healthy mouth in 2015!
